Why We Love Calgary

There is a moment that happens to everyone who lives here. You are driving on a clear morning or evening, the road tips over a rise, and the Rockies come up out of the horizon against the sunrise or the sunset. It feels surreal. You have seen it a hundred times and it still gets you every single time. It is breathtaking, and you smile to yourself about how beautiful this moment is.

That is Calgary. A city that keeps handing you reasons to love it.

I sell real estate here because I believe in this place. My children grow up here, and this is the place I have rebuilt my own life, more than once. Here is why people fall in love.

The mountains are a Saturday, not a vacation

Less than an hour and you are in Bragg Creek. A little farther and you are in Kananaskis, then Canmore, then Banff. No flights, no planning, no taking days off work. You wake up, you decide, you go.

In winter it is the same story with the ski hills. In summer the trails open up and this becomes a biker's dream life, whether that means a road ride out through the foothills or dropping into single track with the peaks in every direction.

Calgary gives you every opportunity to have the most beautiful weekend possible.

No PST, it is like a gift from the gods

Alberta is the only province in Canada without a provincial sales tax. Five percent GST and that is the end of the conversation.

It sounds small on a coffee. It is not small on a couch, a truck, a renovation, or a year of ordinary life. Add in no payroll tax and no health premiums and you are looking at the lowest overall tax burden in the country. Alberta's tax advantage for 2026 to 2027 was measured at 16.9 billion dollars.

That is money that stays in your pocket, and that difference could be a down payment on a house.

The sunshine cannot be beat

Calgary gets sun on roughly 330 days a year. More than almost any major city in Canada.

I do not think people understand what that does to a life until they have lived somewhere grey. Light changes how you get out of bed. It changes how your kids play. It changes whether a Tuesday in February feels survivable or beautiful. Here, the sun shows up for you.

Chinooks break up our winters

An arch of cloud shows up on the western sky, the wind turns warm, and the city goes from minus twenty to plus twelve in a matter of hours. Snow disappears off the sidewalks and for a moment it is short sleeves and flip flops in the middle of January.

The river pathways make an ordinary run feel spectacular

Over 1,000 kilometres of pathway, the largest urban pathway network in North America, with the Bow and the Elbow running straight through the middle of the city.

You can leave your front door, get on a path, and be moving beside moving water within minutes. Runners, walkers, cyclists, people pushing strollers, people just needing to think. There are stretches along the Bow where the water is loud and the trees close in and you genuinely forget you are inside a city of 1.6 million people.

A city that gives you somewhere beautiful to move your body every day is a city that is looking after you.

Real wages mean you can actually afford the life you want

This is the one that matters most in my work.

Average detached pricing in Calgary sits near 641,000 dollars. In Vancouver it is around 1.2 million. In Toronto it is around 1.1 million. Meanwhile Calgary households earn among the highest incomes in the country.

Strong income against reasonable prices is the whole equation. It is the difference between renting forever and owning something. It is a yard for the kids, a garage for the gear, and being able to say yes to the ski pass and the soccer season in the same year.

And then the whole city goes Stampeding for ten days

Ten days every July where Calgary collectively decides to be the friendliest place on planet earth.

Strangers are not strangers, they are your new best buddies in white hats who cannot stop yelling "Yeehaw!" Everyone eats too many pancakes and food invented by someone's wild imagination. The sky lights up with spectacular fireworks. The whole city turns magical.

This is why I do what I do

Calgary was ranked Canada's most livable city in 2026, and more than three quarters of us rate our own quality of life here as good. I am not surprised by either of those.

Helping someone find a home here is not just a transaction to me. It is handing somebody the keys to Saturday mornings in Kananaskis, and pathway runs along the Bow, and a January chinook, and ten days in July where everybody is on the same team.
