Ramsay
Overview
Ramsay is one of Calgary’s oldest residential areas, developed in the 1880s and pulled together in 1956 from four separate districts: Burnsland, Brewery Flats, Grandview and Mills Estate. It sits on the hill east of the Elbow River and the Stampede grounds, and at under a square kilometre it is small, steep in places, and unlike anywhere else in the city.
Lifestyle
Scotsman’s Hill along the western edge gives one of the best skyline and Stampede views in Calgary, and downtown is close enough to walk. Character homes, artist studios and small industry sit side by side here, and the Inglewood shops and restaurants are immediately north.
What you get here
The housing runs old and varied. Many homes date to the early 1900s or before, on a street grid that predates modern planning, so lot shapes are irregular and the terrain genuinely matters. Around three in ten dwellings are condo or apartment and close to half the housing is renter occupied. Infill has been arriving steadily, which means original character cottages and modern builds often sit directly across the street from each other.
Getting around
Macleod Trail and Blackfoot Trail are close, downtown is a short drive or a real walk, and the Victoria Park/Stampede station sits just west across the tracks. A Green Line station at Inglewood/Ramsay has been in the plans for years, but that project has been redesigned more than once, so confirm where it currently stands rather than assuming a timeline.
Schools
Ramsay Elementary and École Sainte Anne are both in the community, and Janus Academy, a private school specializing in autism, is here as well. Designation depends on your exact address and can change, so confirm with the CBE or Calgary Catholic school finder before relying on it.
What to check before you buy here
- This is old housing on old infrastructure. Foundations, wiring, plumbing and drainage all deserve real scrutiny, and on a sloped lot, drainage most of all.
- Ramsay borders the Alyth and Bonnybrook industrial area and sits near active rail. Visit at different times of day, including early morning, before deciding how much that affects you.
- Stampede week changes this community for ten days every July. Traffic, parking and noise come with the address, and some owners rent out parking spots because of it.
- Lot shapes here are irregular and the topography is real. Get a current Real Property Report and understand exactly what you own before planning a garage or an addition.

Common questions about Ramsay
Is Ramsay a good place to live in Calgary?
It suits people who want character, views and to be minutes from downtown, and who are not bothered by a community that mixes housing with light industry and rail. If you want quiet uniformity, it is the wrong fit.
What are the views in Ramsay like?
Scotsman’s Hill on the western edge looks straight across at the downtown skyline and over the Stampede grounds. It is one of the best known vantage points in the city, particularly during Stampede fireworks.
How close is Ramsay to downtown?
Very close. It sits just southeast of the core, roughly a couple of kilometres, which makes it a short drive, a quick ride along the river pathways, or a walk of about half an hour depending where in the community you start.
